An introduction to grading Beauty is subjective, conditions are not. Some collectors may particularly like old coins with a particular patina, but none of them will be particularly happy to buy a scratched coin. In order to gauge the average market value of a rare coin a system called grading was invented. Grading is usually intimidating for people who have just started to collect old coins.
